Global SEEBASE is a high resolution basement model of the globe developed using a specialised ‘bottom-up’ data management and interpretation worflow. Delivereables include depth to Moho, basement terranes, basement composition, depth to basement, and predicted heat flow

Global SEEBASE is available globally or by customsied regional extract.

Global SEEBASE®

SEEBASE Depth to Basement

SEEBASE Depth to Basement is a unique hand-contoured depth to basement surface that is consistent with the structural evolution of the basin.

The Geognostics SEEBASE workflow produces depth-to-basement through development of a structural model, interpretation of potential field data, and calibration through seismic, wells and constraints from literature sources.

Predicted Heat Flow

The SEEBASE model provides the underlying elements to predict heat flow and temperature away from existing measurements and to produce a spatially continuous, geologically consistent, geothermal model including key elements such as the contribution of upper crustal radiogenic heat production, basement and upper crustal thickness, and transient heat flow resulting from relatively young tectonothermal events.

SEEBASE® Geothermal model includes:

  • Mantle Heat Flow

  • Oceanic Heat Flow

  • Radiogenic Upper Crust Heat Production and Heat Flow

  • Transient Events, Transient Heat Flow, and Crustal Thinning

  • Heat Flow at Top Basement

  • Total Heat Flow

  • Geothermal Gradient and Temperature at Top Basement

  • Model Validation Tests (IHFC) and Notes Overlay

Basement Composition

The basement composition coverage has been developed using an interpretation of gravity and magnetic data primarily calibrated with regional-scale surface geology and supported by seismic and bottom-hole well data where available.

The initial compilation incorporated over two decades of interpretation completed by Frogtech Geoscience which has been integrated, standardized, updated and extended top complete the global coverage as necessary. The resulting coverage includes over 300,000 polygons, attributed using a set of 66 different lithologies, and is the first dataset of this type and resolution at global scale.

Basement Terranes

A detailed, globally consistent basement terrane interpretation, supported by extensive attributes and associated references, provides:

  • An improved understanding of the origin and tectonic history of terranes, which help to constrain the nature of regional deformation events, their timing, associated strain vectors and deformation response.

  • Improved understanding of the relationship between basement terranes, the overlying sedimentary basins and their mineral and petroleum systems.

  • Improved understanding, constrains and inputs for plate reconstructions through time.

  • More accurate prediction for the distribution of petroleum play elements, and the likely location of mineralising systems.

Each terrane is interpretated using potential field data, supported by literature, and is documented with terrane type, megaterrane, basement, maximum and minimum ages, a detailed abstract, and associated references.

Depth to Moho

Existing depth to Moho datasets can suffer from shortcomings including markedly different depths compared to surrounding (constrained) areas, significant differences in depth between different Moho models, inclusion of crustal anomalies in gravity inversions, etc.

The advantages of the SEEBASE Moho over other Moho models is a combination of:

  • Integration and comparison of a range of constraining data and existing Moho interpretations

  • Expert in-house interpretation of long-wavelength gravity data using depth constraining data, and

  • Comparison with tectonic evolution, structural architecture and depth to basement (SEEBASE®) model for any given area.
